Your initiation in Marrakech will start in the medina, the old quarter of Marrakech. From there, we will explore this historically charming region on foot. In Djemma el Fna, you will visit the famous 12th century Koutouba mosque and its influential minaret. Your guide will lead you through the labyrinthine streets and alleys of Djemma. Enjoy the aromatic smells, taste freshly squeezed orange juice and venture into the souks specializing in Berber carpets, silver jewelry, handicraft workshops, artisanal shoes and tanneries. Marrakech is a city of underground canals built by architects from Cordoba in Spain to provide water to the city and the palm grove. We will head to the Lower Medina to explore other secrets of Marrakech: the El Mansour Mosque, the 16th century Saadian tombs with their steep towers, the ruined 16th century El Badhi Palace and the Mellah and Jewish Quarter. We will head to the Lower Medina to explore other secrets of Marrakech: the El Mansour Mosque, the 16th century Saadian tombs with their steep towers, the ruined 16th century El Badhi Palace and the Mellah and Jewish Quarter. Lunch then explore the Mellah to visit the 19th century Bahia Palace, originally built for Si Moussa, a former slave who became chamberlain to King Moulay Hassan. The palace houses a courtyard and riads decorated with beautifully carved stuccoes of Arabic architecture. Next, we will visit the Museum of Contemporary Moroccan Art or Tiskiwin, a private museum dedicated to popular arts and crafts, designed as a beautiful Hispano-Moroccan house, next to the Dar Si Said Palace, a reduced version of Bahia. En route to the new city, we will sail to the French, Gueliz and head to the Majorelle Garden, a small, magical and lush garden designed by Jacque Majorelle and maintained by Yves Saint Laurent. The Majorelle garden is filled with colorful pedestrian walkways, ponds, cactus plants and a beautiful craft store. Back at your hotel, we will pass by the garden of the hotel La Mammounia (where Alfred Hitchcock wrote the famous movie The Birds).
